Some couples cannot use their own eggs or sperm. Donor programmes make pregnancy possible using eggs or sperm from a screened donor.
Donor eggs
Donor eggs may be suggested for women with very low egg reserve, early menopause, or repeated IVF failure due to egg quality. The donor’s eggs are fertilised with the partner’s sperm, and the embryo is transferred to the intended mother’s womb.
Donor sperm
Donor sperm may be used when the male partner has no sperm and none can be retrieved, or carries a genetic condition. Donor sperm can be used for IUI or IVF.
How donors are screened
All donors are tested for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis (VDRL) and other infections, along with blood group and general health. Semen quality is checked against WHO criteria. A record of each donor’s physical characteristics, education and blood group is kept so that we can match donors to recipients.
Donor programmes in India are governed by the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021. Donors are sourced through registered ART banks, donor identity is kept confidential, and the law sets strict rules on donor age, eligibility and the number of donations.
