IUI (intrauterine insemination)

Prepared sperm are placed in the womb at ovulation. Often the first treatment to try.

In intrauterine insemination (IUI), washed and concentrated sperm are placed directly in the womb around the time of ovulation. It is simpler and less expensive than IVF, and is often the first treatment we try.

Sperm preparation

The semen sample is processed with a density-gradient technique that separates the most active, normally shaped sperm from dead sperm and debris. The prepared sample is clean and concentrated, which improves the chance of success. A private room is available for semen collection at the hospital.

We also prepare sperm samples for other clinics that perform IUI at their own centres.

Who IUI suits

  • Women with ovulation problems, including PCOS, who have at least one open tube
  • Women with mild endometriosis that has been treated, and open tubes
  • Luteal phase defects
  • Problems with cervical mucus
  • Men with slightly reduced sperm count or movement
  • Couples with unexplained infertility

What to expect

  1. Tablets or injections to help an egg mature, with scans to track it
  2. An injection to trigger ovulation when the egg is ready
  3. The IUI itself, about 36 hours later. It takes a few minutes and feels like a routine examination
  4. A pregnancy test about two weeks later

Common questions

How many IUI cycles should we try?

Most pregnancies from IUI happen within the first three or four cycles. If IUI has not worked by then, we usually discuss moving to IVF.

Do I need to rest afterwards?

You can rest for a few minutes in the clinic and then go back to your normal routine.
